Conlan - a two-row variety of barley as seen in this photo of its side-by-side kernels. Most U.S. brewers use six-row barley which mixes better with corn and rice in the brew mash. Outside the U.S. brewers use two-row variety which is slightly higher yielding in starch. We found this seed at http://www.alseed.com/about/ Albert Lea seedhouse in Minnesota, a family-run seed company who donated the seed to us. Pinnacle - another two-row barley variety. We received this seed from Carl Duley at Buffalo County Wisconsin Extension who is also conducting research on barley. Their fields lie about four hours south in the thick black soil of the Driftless region of wisconsin, so don't compare our results too closely; we've recenly been underneath a glacier up here. Rasmussen - a six-row variety, this one is holding up its awns. This one has been grown in South Dakota, we'll see how it holds up here. Robust - a six-row variety and local favorite that is grown in the region. This seed we picked up from the Zifco farm, a local grain grower. Scarlett - a two-row variety grown widely in Europe. Stellar - this variety seemed to be outperforming the others at mid-season. We'll see how it tests for malting quality when we get our results back from U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center and Cereal Crops Laboratory in Madison, WI.
